Does Congress Really Want to Artificially Inflate the Price of Gas to $3.50 to Gain More Tax Revenue?

14

I heard that Congress wants to be able to collect even more money off of gas. People are doing what they are told and conserving resources. Now tax collection is lower. Congress wants to add $1.50 or so to the price since we were used to paying $3.50 anyhow, and at the same time be able to collect more tax money. Is this true? Does Obama support this idea?

I heard the same thing. Fvck congress!!!!!!

Relax, you don’t have to worry about this because OPEC will cut production in the face of drastically reduced demand and this will force the price of gas back up to $5 a gallon. The low prices you are seeing now will not last long, so fillerup while you have the chance.

It’s not for tax revenue, and actually in some ways it is a good idea, but Obama is not on record supporting it.

The idea isn’t tax revenue, it’s to stabilize gas prices, so they don’t jump up and down and cause market instability. That, and setting gas prices higher would ensure a more rapid shift to sustainable energy. But it’s actually believed by many economists that consumers would save money in the long run because they’d be spared the peaks of oil prices, like we saw last summer, because price and demand would be relatively stable.

No. Taxes are levied per gallon. So the government makes more money when the prices are low, since people drive more.

But liberals want high prices for environmental reasons.

Obama said in the primary that he would support $5 gas as “a good start”.

He’s a Democrat! Of course he supports this idea! Democrats love taxes. Taxes are the cocaine of choice for liberals. The more they have, the more they want.

Here is the new Democratic idea of tax reform:

The only question on the tax form:

1. How much did you make?

End of form:

Send it in!

Yes, Obama has already set up his personnal commision account

yeah democrats always think taxing things is the answer and the government currently taxes us .40cents on the gallon, in comparison exxon makes 6-7 cents on the gallon.

High gas prices are what precipitated this last slide into recession. They want more recession, I guess. It takes time for automakers to design and build better, more efficient cars, and it takes time for those effects to flow on down to those at the bottom, who often own older, less efficient cars. People coped with rapidly-rising gas prices by cutting back in many areas of their budgets, which has caused the present decline in consumer spending that has led to the recession we are having right now.

If those in charge really want to cause a deep, lasting depression, like the one that started in 1929, this would be the way to do it.

The democrats never saw a tax they didn’t like

Since they make 4x more in taxes than the oil companies profit selling the stuff – my best guess would be it doesn’t matter to them – they suck us dry either way

And taxes are levied for leasing the land (domestic oil) – for property taxes on the refineries – for corporate and capital gains – imported oil and then AGAIN at the pump

Joanie @ 1:11 am #

Not just congress but state governments also. The lie is that taxes are paid on a per gallon sold basis not on price per gallon. The only other means to tax gasoline is on the distribution, and manufacturing profits. And when you tax profit the cost is passed on to the consumer which increase the price of everything.

The real reason is that green democrats know that without high gas prices they can not mandate alternative energy programs and regulate the auto industry. It’s all about power and the proliferation of an un natural economic environmental policy.

Jason, if your theory is correct, when was the last time you ever saw a government manipulation of an economic process be successful in the long term? We are face with the largest one in 70 years because we allowed the government to do what they thought was best and give mortgages to people that could not afford them. Which inflated the prices of homes and when they couldn’t pay deflated the prices of homes and your 401K.

Actually they are working on a system where your mileage driven is recorded on your car. You will pay state and federal tax based on that

Oh BTW, they are raising your taxes right now. When the fed prints paper money, it has no value. When released into the economy, it suddenly has the same value as your money. Where does it get it’s value? From your money. Your cash, savings checking, investments all become worth less. A portion of your money’s value is transferred to the new printed money, as soon as it is spent. Just not called a tax, and few people know it. Governments been raising everyone’s taxes that way for years, and will continue to.
