does coasting in a car save gas?

8

i was thinking this. on my way home from where i work, there is a pretty long hill that i go down. i was wondering that, if i put it in neutral and coast down the hill would it (A) save gas?, and (B) hurt my car going back into drive (at 45 mph)? thanks.

…does holding your breath save energy ?

You will strain your transmission if you shift into drive at 45mph, kinda not supposed to do that. If you wana save gas, just dont accelerate, but there are other things to check for to save gas. For example making sure your tire pressure is correct and getting a tune-up for your car.

Doing that on an automatic would mess up the transmission, it would be fine on a manual though. I don’t think it would save that much gas.

Yes, it will save gas but only if you drive a standard shift. Don’t even think of doing it with an automatic transmission as it could destroy your transmission.
When shifting back into gear from neutral start with high gear to avoid over reving your engine then shift down to the proper gear for the speed you are traveling.

It wouldnt save you any gas worth mentioning. Maybe a drop or two since your rpm’s would be lower then in drive. Its really not even worth the effort to put the car in neutral. And no it would not hurt your car to put it back into Drive.
Cars in these days have a chip in them that reads the speed of the car, so if you accidentally bump your shifter into neutral and you put it back Your tranny will be in the right gear. Thats why you cant put a newer car in reverse, it locks it out when going over a certian mph.

no it a falacy (a widely accepted false belief) you transmision will slow you down as it is, and the motor wont work on overtime trying to keep up by burning extra fuel. it will hurt you transmision because it sounds to me like you have an automatic, and automatics drop back to first when going back into drive. with a stick you can out it back into the apropriate gear.

Coasting will save gas. If you have an automatic transmission slamming your gear shift in to drive from neutral at 45mph could cost you a transmission. If You have a manual transmission this feat would not be a problem as long as you don’t downshift to too low a gear like 1st or 2Nd gear

Really? Gee wish I had you guys around to warn me about this danger 60 years ago! That’s how long I’ve been doing this and surprise, surprise… I have yet to injure a transmission. The reason I haven’t is that I learned a long time ago how to shift a manual trannie without using the clutch – you match your speed with the rpm and you can shift through all the gears. Same thing with an automatic. You can’t just be coasting along at 45mph with IDLING RPM and slam it back into gear! You have to rev it up a tad to the rpm it would be at 45mph. So, done properly, yes, I believe it is a safe practice and will not harm your automatic and it actually saves on gas. In fuel consumption, it’s the rpm of the engine that counts. Low rpm – gas efficiency. High rpm, gas guzzler.
