That used to be the case a while ago but they have made some good improvements to automatics now that if they are both 6 speeds, it probably makes little difference. The biggest difference is that you can control the way you drive more in a manual but really if there’s a 3mpg difference, that’s not a whole lot of money monthly.
As a general rule manual transmissions are more fuel efficient than automatics. Due to being able to control the engine RPM’s.
Auto’s use more fuel than manuals due to increased power losses due to design. The gap between manual and auto has narrowed through the use of 6 speed and lock up final ratios.
The difference will depend on make and model but probably in the range of 5-10% more fuel for the auto.
In most countries the auto is also more expensive to purchase.
Some manufacturers and road tests quote the difference in mileage.
ALWAYS
It depends on the car.
Many modern automatic transmissions can be just as or more fuel efficient.

The same Lexus gets better gas mileage with a semi-auto.
