Do you think we should return to the national 55 speed limit we had in force in the 70s?

This would conserve gas and drive down prices, I have heard this stuff about the manufactures responsibility to make cars that get better millage as the answer, That is unresonable in the short term.

If you reduce the speed limit to 55 in all states, you will have to add 50,000 new trucks and drivers to the road to deliver the same amount of goods we are using right now. The added miles driven, the added strain on an already overworked driver force, and the new infrastructure needed for that many new trucks would negate any fuel savings/pollution reduction that a 55mph limit might bring.

In short, it is not practical, and would have no positive effect.

no then there will be traffic if we all go that slow, think about how many americans drive everyday? some much traffic it will take 4 hours to get at least 20 miles.

The amount of gas saved by driving at lower speeds is not that significant. It was a ploy to bring in a speed limit. It does dramatically reduce injuries in an accident, but no one believes they are going to be in an accident. The road safety aspect therefore is not a vote winner. It won’t drive down prices. Car manufacturers could improve fuel consumption tomorrow but they won’t because it will increase the cost of making cars and the average buyer won’t buy until they realise the cost to themselves of damaging the environment.
A better plan would be to allow only fuel efficient cars on certain roads.
Why are you complaining about the price of gas anyway?
Try paying what we pay for it in europe

In the 70″s gas prices were 39 cents a gallon. If a speed law limit went into effect today, the only problem we’d be having wouldn’t be saving on gas useage, and prices, but rather on “road rage”….because you’ll have ‘one’ in every crowd, who’ll want to go the fastest, be out front, or just some fool out there in the passing lane cluttering it up…… I personally think it should be at 60 for trucks and 65 for cars….then that way if we want to do 67 and trucks want to do 62 or 63,,,, everyone is happy. I think its wrong to expect truck drivers to do 55 and everyone else to go 65 or 70….because those 4-wheelers are uaually about 90% to blame for the wrecks that involve a semi-truck,,,,or a school bus….or a logging truck. Out here in Eastern Oregon, we see it happen “ALL THE TIME” !!! It’s not fair to those truck drivers, as they will usually always get the blame,,,,and they don’t deserve it. Those guys have way more machinary to get stopped in the event of an accident,,,so they need way more room to get stopped. So lowering the speed limit won’t help for that reason. I’m not saying to go faster, I’m saying if ya go voting anything in, it should be a plan to protect all drivers and not set up to protect just the 4-wheeler’s out there. Set it up so our roads are safe for everyone…..putting the speed limit at 55 for everyone, is a mistake,,,,,,,but putting it at 60,,,,,, will allow the safer drivers (the truckers, who already use common sense), to be on the same playing field as those 4-wheelers who want more road, and to be more and more rude to others. Cars that now get better milage, if you look around you, are also the very same ones that are out there going way too fast , because they think they can,,,,,,and cause the most accidents…..
