do you have to go certain miles per hour on the highway in order to save gasoline?
by the way, i have a toyota corolla, i think it’s suppose to save me more gas, but it looks all the same to me when gasoline is this high.
thanks
i think it’s mph.

Try going at 55 mph on the highway. The US had this speed limit for years and the reason behind that was probably because it is the most efficient speed for highway driving.
I’ve read that 55-60 mph is the gas saving rangeand Draft behind a Semi truck..
Well it’s not 80mph. So there goes that excuse. 50 to 60 is where you get the best mileage.
For every five miles you go over 55mph, your gas mileage is decreased by 15%.
Im guessing that you are getting at fact that on the highway you get more miles to the gallon than in the city, the biggest thing about that is stopping and starting for stoplights and that is what makes your gasmileage so poor in the city, not how fast ur going
It is supposedly between 55 and 60, but the tests that have been run to try to prove either way have never really been conclusive (mostly because there is so little difference between them).
If you could go 70 or 80 without slowing down for the next person in front of you, then it wouldn’t make much difference. It’s all because of the constant slowing down and speeding up for traffic that causes gas mileage to plummet.
Summary: If you commute to work, and it’s bumper-to-bumper all the time… buy a hybrid. It’s much more efficient.
Keeping a steady speed and not accelerating to pass every one will do well for gas mileage.Speed of the car has nothing to do with it.As long as you are not trying to win the Indianapolis. You do not have to do the set speed limit, because that is exactly what it means, ‘speed limit’ You can drive below the speed limit as long as your not driving too slow and holding up traffic.Never be in a hurry to go anywhere.Always allow plenty of time. Accelerating from a stop should be nice and easy. Better on your overall engine and trans performance and durability.Drive responsive and you will be alot better off for it.
Look at your tachometer, the RPM’s of your engine. The less revolutions your engine is doing the less gas it is using example:
I drive a stick, I could go 30 MPH in 1st gear and have the tachometer read 9000 RPM’s meaning the engine is going through 9000 cycles per min to move the car 30 MPH. However if I shift up to 6th gear, the car is still traveling at 30 MPH and the tachometer reads about 1000 RPM’s meaning the engine is only doing 1000 cycles per min……higher RPM’s = more gas being used
This is possible because of the gear ratio….since you have a corolla and its automatic notice when you get up to around 65-70 MPH where the tachometer is at, slow down until it is as low as it will go before shifting down to the next gear…..meaning go 65 try slowing down…notice how the tachometer will go from a low number, then when you hit a certain speed, it will shift down a gear, giving you higher RPM’s (more gas being used)….
However on the highway your car will prolly be in the highest gear so slow down to a speed where the tachometer is at the lowest number and you are traveling at a decent speed…..
I hope all this made sense lol
U can do a lot of things to get more mileage from your car. The easiest would be to drive at around 50 to 60 mph on the highway. Avoid stop go traffic. Stop gradually. If you are coming up on a light slow the car down and brake smoothly. When starting from a light start smoothly instead of reving up the engine. All this will help in improving mileage.
A toyota corolla is typically tuned for mileage so you may not see much difference.
the actual speed range for best gas mileage is 45 to 50 one of the car i owned gets 45(44.8) going 65mph constant but when i tried again going 55 constant i got it actually increased to 50(49.6) MPG then i tried one more experiment keep my average 45 to 47MPH i got 54(54.1) MPG . It kinda piqued my curiousity so i tried for an average speed at 40 to 42 it dropped to 49 (48.9)MPG then I tried another experiment 50 to 52 MPH i got 50(50.3) MPG. So I do not know if the manufacturers have improved on the cruising speed for the highest economy on 2000 and newer cars. but i tried the same method to many others cars a trucks that I had owned they all showed me the best speed range for the highest economy is 45 to 50
