I think it might save gas at the expense of starter and flywheel components. Also the entire electrical system. Some of these new super economy cars do it and I think in the long run it will be bad for those who buy them.

No , shutting of your engine at stop lights will not save you gas . It will just put more wear on your battery/starter .

New cars with fuel injection takes almost no gas to restart. The recommended time is if you idle for over 1 minute shut it off to save gas, otherwise let it run.
Of course I’ll get thumbs down for this answer, but those people are smarter than the experts in this field.
