No it doesn’t waste gas. A car with a manual shift trans will get better economy than an automatic will. At least that’s the way it used to be. Nowadays the auto trans has a lockup converter that makes it a direct drive going through the trans and you don’t have the loss for automatic transmission slip anymore.
When you press in the clutch, the engine drops to stationary rpm, which is generally more or less the lowest rpm a running engine can have. The lower the rpms, the lower the fuel consumption.
You can save gas by driving more “conservatively” (i.e. by not burning rubber), keeping the air pressure in the tyres at the proper level, not carrying unnecessary excess weight in the car, leaving the car in the driveway for short trips or combining a bunch of short trips into one long one, turning the engine off if you’re stuck in a traffic jam, etc.
