Check Fuel Cap error message on a 2005 Ford Mustang GT?
Have anyone else had this same problem? I checked the cap 10 times, I reset the message and it still comes on.
What did you do to correct the problem? I’m going to take it to the dealership this week but I would rather save a trip if I can find a fix.

if i were you i would go bc our thing kept coming on and we ended up having a leak in the vaccuum hose…. have you tried replacing your gas cap? the one on there now is probablly stripped
Theres a vent hose disconnected. the computer monitors the fuel evaporations exiting the tank and computer is seeing the pressure at atmospheric pressure and is throwing a code
It sounds like the vent in the cap itself is blocked.
It is possible that you need a new cap, but for a 2 yr old car i doubt it. Could be something else. It should be under warrentee. Take it in. warentee service is free.
you simply have to reset the code. unfortunately if you dont have the computer to plug in to the car the dealer can only reset it
Ok here is the low down…..
The check gas cap light is on because the car’s computer sensed a leak in the emissions system and set a P0457 (evap gross leak) in the computer’s memory. People would normally set codes because of a loose gas cap, so now Ford and others found it easier to do this than have people come in for us to turn the light off with a scan tool for not tightening the gas cap…
Instead of having it turn on the check engine light when it sees it the first go around, it will turn on the check gas cap warning now.
After letting the car sit for 8 hours, go drive it for about 10 miles thru stop and go and highway driving after making sure the gas cap is tight with 3 clicks to the right, if the check gas cap light doesn’t go out after driving it for the 10 or so miles, bring it to a dealer as you may have a big leak (as big leaks other than the gas cap can cause this)… But the check gas cap light is designed to go out by itself (All this is basically listed in your owners manual, but I’m give the real technical explanation of it)
