No….Plus, it’s bad on the transmission. Don’t do it.
yeah I guess….at the same time, maybe it will be a good idea if you take your feet of the brakes to save on wear and tear of the brakes and just let it go…..
No, and you could cause an accident. Rent the film “The World According To Garp.”
Yes, in a roundabout way, but so little that it’s not worth it to do it.
I doubt that it would be much. You don’t normally accelerate down a hill anyway.
Not enough to make it worthwhile. Plus, I think it’s illegal.
very minimal
puts wear in tranny
Yeah, maybe like a shot glass full per tank. It’s hardly worth it. Carpool or take the bus if you really want to make a difference.
Yes, a little. But only if you ease up on the gas petal at the same time. It’s just as effective to simply slow down as your descending the hill.
you probably could, but the trade off would be more frequent break repair, If you have a strait shift, downshifting might be a better idea.
I wouldn’t do it in an automatic, but I used to do it all the time with a stick.
In most states it’s illegal to shift into neutral and coast downhill or coast on a level road. You need to be in total control of your car at all times, and being in gear helps you do this, When going downhill a manual transmission slows the car when you downshit. An automatic transmission, of course, does this automatically.
As for saving gas, you will save a very tiny amount. This is because the time it takes to descend down a hill with the engine idling will not make a big enough difference to notice.
It’s not a good idea to go downhill in neutrel…unless you got good brakes. I can give some advise though…how about finding a shorter way to your destination…use your air condition less if not needed, roll the windows down…no speed racer driver type, drive within the speed limits…and fill up gas when you’re really empty, and not filling $5, $2, when you want.
