Can you convert a 6 cylinder to a 4 cylinder?
I was just wondering, to conserve on gas, can you convert a 6 cylinder engine to a 4 cylinder? Also, if getting rid of one of the exhaust lines (I have duel exhaust) would conserve on gas as well? I have a 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix. It’s a V6 and is guzzling gas like you wouldn’t believe. Would changing the air filter help conserve gas as well. The needle fluctuates a lot. When accelerating it goes down to empty then back up to whatever the gas level is. What is that?

you cannot convert this as you think. duel exhaust is there for a reason so help with the economy of the car. get a tuneup on your car if you have never had one. quit using ethanol gas and yes replacing the air filter will help if it is dirty. stay out of the gas as to where you accelerate hard ease into it and you will conserve gas.
Short answer: You are better off trading your car for a 4 cylinder
You probably can, but you won’t gain in economy; it would be much less expensive and much less troublesome to trade cars. But first, get a good tune-up. That car should not be a gas guzzler unless it is completely worn out.
How heavy is your accelerator foot?
That may be the biggest problem.
(1) no you do not CONVERT 6 to 4 cylinder. People swap engine to smaller engine (to 4 cylinder engines).
(2) duel exhaust helps with economy
(3) the fuel gauge dropping is the problem with fuel gauge.
(4) it would be cheaper to sell then buy a smaller car then to swap engines
(5) it might be cheaper to fix whatever problem you have then to sell / buy another car. My old 94 Civic still get 40 MPG on the highway – well maintained.
Good Luck…
way of doing this cheapest would be shutting off 2 cylinders(shut off injectors), instead of cutting off or anything that requires lot of labors. after shutting off you’ll need to tune the ECU so the timing of the fire sequence of other 4 cylinders would be correct, and you might need to get a custom crankshaft. but all this wouldn’t be worth the money or time. changing air filter won’t make tremendous difference unless the old filter was jammed with dirt and bugs. i don’t know what your asking on the last part of question please be specific. it might be fuel pressure guage or air/fule guage. just trade in and get civic or something.
