can i speed shift in my 2001 chevy cavalier 4 speed automatic? and will it save me gas mileage?
on my shifter, it says P,R,N,D,1,2, & 3. i know the 1,2,3 is to be used in bad weather, but when i am driving through town, can i speed shift manually with the 1,2,3? Will it save me gas mileage?

No it wont save you mileage. In fact it may cost you mileage because it may faster and when necessary. Automatics are smarter than most people.
You can certainly try..
No it won’t…
Transmissions are expensive!
You ask a good question-If I had total control of what gear to start-out in and when to shift to what gear, could I improve my mileage? I say yes if you are willing to modify the trans for full manual operation. To drive it would mean full attention on what gear you are in at what speed. The crisp and hard shifting is more efficient than stock auto shifting. Are you willing to row through the gears(up and down) while negating any other driver from being able to drive it ? The engine and brake system can be fine tuned to your specific driving style with major gains in fuel mileage under this scenario. Are you willing to sacrifice the user friendly aspects of your vehicle? Are you willing to drive with both hands fully on the controls?
LOL, good luck replacing your tranny!
i shift 1234 in my cavi and it saves gas, u can do it, shift 1st to 2nd @ 3 rpm. 2nd to 3rd @ 3 1/2 rpm. then 4th gear @4 rpm this is what i do unless iam raceing. dont floor it in first if u r not ready to watch the rpms and shift quickly, cavilers have great pickup in 1st u will overev n blow yr car up
