Can I save money on gas by taking seats out of van?

7

I have a 2000 Dodge Caravan 4 cyclinder. I could take out the middle and third row. Would it make sense or I wouldn’t save much?

Wouldn’t save much. Have you tuned up the van lately? Also keeping the tires aired up propperly helps as well.

Reduce weight saves gas. Maybe 1 mpg.

Will it save gas. Yes.

Will it save alot of gas. No.

The seats probably only weigh as much as 1 or 2 passengers.

To me it really depends on how much trouble it is to take out the seats. If you don’t have to put them back in frequently it might help.

Just try it and see what your results are.

You might get better results by concentrating on driving very gently. No hard take offs or hard stops, coast more often.

Would save a little, so little you would never know it. What “soaplake” said would save you the most.

Theoretically yes. The less the downward force (earth’s gravity acting on mass) means less friction and less energy needed to start the car moving. I don’t know if it would be noticeably different but in theory it would save gas, saving money.

From the website linked below:

“Avoid keeping unnecessary items in your vehicle, especially heavy ones. An extra 100 pounds in your vehicle could reduce your MPG by up to 2 percent. The reduction is based on the percentage of extra weight relative to the vehicle’s weight and affects smaller vehicles more than larger ones.”

So to echo all of the other responses, you will save some gas, but it will be barely noticeable in the short run. If you don’t need the seats for a long period of time, I would recommend taking it out. I wouldn’t take it out for just a handful of trips though…it would probably be more trouble than it’s worth.
