Can I Put Regular Unleaded Gasoline Instead Of Premium Unleaded In My 2000 Bmw 330i?
My car calls for Premium Unleaded Gasoline (BMW 330i). I was wondering what the effects would be if I were to put Regular in to save a few Dollars? Would it do major damage to the engine? Also, what would happen if I put ‘Super’ in?
Thanks a lot for the help!

Yes you can. Over a long period of time it can damage your engine becuase the engine has to work harder to burn the fuel. The higher the octane, the colder the temperature has to be to burn the fuel. Also, the performance of your BMW will be sacraficed, but you wouldn’t be able to tell. Only race car driver would be able to tell the difference. The lower the octane will also decrease your horsepower output, but not enough to tell. I would recomend adding an octane boost, or fuel injector cleaner to the gas tank every couple of months if you don’t want to use premium fuel.
You will probably end up spending as much as you save with cheaper gas, lower octane is less fuel efficient and your car wont preform as well, my BMWs (95 525i and 03 x5) feel sluggish without higher octane.
The long term effects that putting regular gas might cause on the car Im not sure of, but I think its best to put in a higher octane level, ot what ever is reccomended for your car. (I believe most BMWs require 91 or above?)
I drive a 95 525i daily and for four years was filling up with plus gasoline (87 octane). When I started using premium gasoline (93 octane) about a month ago I noticed a significant difference in the preformance and gas mileage.
NO DAMAGE.
All modern cars have engine knock sensor to prevent engine damaging engine knocks.
But you might notice the lack of power on hot days and heavy load (uphill, etc.).
Good Luck…

P.S. High OCTANE is not a measure of quality or energy quality. It just measure resistance to auto (self) ignition at high compression. Don’t listen to other writers above. They are talking from old school (old – pre engine knock sensor – technology)
honestly, it’s worth paying the 20-30 cent difference in the long run. i drive a 2000 bmw 323ci, and even though it says use premium, i chose to use regular instead because of the higher cost of premium, but something went bad in about 6 months of me doing this, and the cost to fix the damage was a little more than 4k; so i think 20-30 cents more per gallon, is well worth it. (:
lol, my aunt did that and when she was driving her car was reving by itself, as if vroom, vroom, vroom. I bet people thought she wanted to race them or something.
so I wouldent put regular unleaded gas.
And isent ‘super’ the same as premium, or did you mean the middle one. (just put premium)
I have a 328 and 87 is the minimum octane rating.
If I put in 87 there will be engine knocking and you won’t have great performance. You’ll also lose MPG because the engine has to retard the timing on the corroborator. This also means you’ll be at the pump more often.
well manual says they recommend premium gas but you dont have to. You will lose performance and some reliability in the long run using regular gas. In my opinion, try not to save a few cents trying to save on gas because it will cost you something in the end.
you won’t get as good of performance from your engine. The octane rating is lower on the regular. but if you can afford a beamer, then shouldn’t you be able to afford it’s fuel??
Yes…. but your engine won’t run as smoothly
God Yes
