Can I deactivate several cylinders on my car in order to save gas?

9

I have an old 96 Maxima, a 6 cylinder car. I’d like to be more gas efficient, and I’m willing to sacrifice power. Can I remove spark plugs or deactivate 2 cylinders in order to give me more gas efficiency? In other words use 4 cylinders instead of 6?

no your car is not designed for that. If you disconnected a cylinder if it starts you are going to have severe power and or gas mileage loss.

no you can not if lets say you pulled the plugs on two cylinders it would still pump gas into the cylinders

baldie @ 1:39 am #

no! your car wouldnt run right.

Hamish McSporran @ 2:24 am #

No. Even if the car would run, it’s using less power to move the same mass around, therefore using more fuel. It would be musch less efficient.

Yes…You can remove spark plug wires and still run…BUT…Your vehicle “Trust ME” is designed to run optimal off of the cylinders your running. It will not run smooth or economical. Probably will burn quite more fuel.

actually yes you can ! if you “deactivate just enough you wont even need gas.

Tomsriv @ 3:09 am #

No, The engines that are designed to do that hold the exhaust valve open and stop injecting fuel on a few cylinders. So they just pump air.

If you removed the spark plug on your car oil and gas would shoot out all over the engine compartment.

If you remove the plug wires it will still be pumping gas and compressing air so it will pollute a lot more and the rest of the cylinders will have to work harder to compress the air in those cylinders.

u can’t do it…you would have to change computer, fuel system at cost of thousands….trade for the car you want…

yes and no you can do this right saving gas or wasting gas
i have a 97 ford ranger 4 cylinder and i have a switch hooked
up in my cab that shuts off one of my 4 “injectors” The good> it does very well on saving on gas but the best way to do this is to shut gas off only when going 55 or higher it dont put to much stress on any thing because your at higher rpm The bad>if you just shut off 1 injector and take off you will notice more because theres more stress taking off than to keep going make sure you give a good tune up to make sure everything running in tip top shape you will be just fine
fuel econ is little things that add up start with just 1 cyl… your car may not do so well with more than one not going
