Using the heater does not use more or less gas. The engine coolant is used to heat up the interior of the car, in stead of dissipating the heat in the radiator. Rather use the fresh air option – it will reduce the buildup of moisture on the inside of the windows.

The heater does not consume any significant amount of fuel.

The heater doesn’t drain your fuel or battery as much as the Air Conditioning. You can maximize your fuel consumption by using the heater at a low speed. The higher the blower/fan speed the more electricity it will use causing your alternator/generator to work more in order to recharge the battery. I can’t tell you how much using a lower blower speed will help, but it is around less than 5-10% fuel gain. You can also leave your defrost off for as long as you can. Some cars use the A/C when defrost or even blend (defrost and floor modes) is used. As long as your alternator is working properly, you can put your blower on high when your car is running and it should not effect your battery too greatly. So, low fan speed, and low accesory usage in general, equals a slight MPG gain.

Heaters will waste a negligible amount of gasoline…not nearly as much as air conditioning. Automotive heaters recycle engine heat, the blower is run off the electrical system as opposed to the air conditioner which is an accessory driven off the crankshaft.

most cars use a/c when heater settings are on defrost to help clear window,so then it will burn a little more fuel !! but regular heat settings will not use any fuel, the alternator basically keeps all you electrical Components working properly and keeps battery charged as you drive with Components on.as long as your alternator is good you won’t have a problem.

Using the heater does not effect fuel mileage in any way shape or form. The heater just blows air past a small radiator in the dash, making use of excess engine heat if you will. The blower runs off the alternator, not the engine so economy does not change.

Your thinking Air Conditioning, which runs off an engine driven compressor that requires several horsepower to function – horsepower going to keeping you cool instead of turning the wheels.
