Bad fuel econ for V6 3.5Lt Mitsubishi nl Pajero (Montero, in U.S.I Think) using 17.7 lts per 100 km?
I Need to find ways of reducing the fuel economy of this make. I am told that the normal fuel economy for this motor is about 11lts to 13 lts per 100 km. The vehicle is stock standard and not carring any extra weight. It is in good repair/condition and the motor is running smoothly. I am running it on 98 oct fuel and drive with a very light foot. The current fuel economy is for local driving conditions (mums taxi) traveling about 20 km a day with no traffic lights.
I have checked the air filter and it does not seem overly dirty. what would be the cheapest parts to replace in the process of elimination as i can’t see the point in spending 1000′s of dollars to try and save $10 to $15 per week.

Tim the best things do not cost correct the air pressure in the tires? Good wax job yes that helps too. you are using the stock width wheels and tires right? What is the average speed, I find if I average around town 28 miles an hour my mileage suffers. Driving in lower gear ratios instead of high gear hurts mileage too. Try a fill up just before the expressway and drive with the speed control on and just see what the Mitsu. will do under optimal conditions. Your mileage will vary.
I could be the engine temp senosr that the ECU uses. If it isn’t working and it thinks the engine is cold, it will run the car rich.
A leaky injector. Pull the plugs and check them. You may find one that is sooty (black but not oily) meaning a bad injector, or all of them may be black due to the above mentioned problem.
Time for a diagnostic checkup while the car is running to get the downstream data into a computer to analyze the various components that regulate the economy of this car.
Check your tire air pressure, this is overlooked quite often. You can also use fuel additives but the cost of the additive but the cost of the additive is more than the gas savings.. good luck
