Yes, many automatics have locking torque converters at HWY speed.s

But the problem is that many people who drive a manual, don’t know what they are doing. So in actual practice most automatics gets better MPG – not worse.

Think about this: MSNBC reported that you can save up to 38% depending on driving habits. That will easily make up for the slight difference in auto vs. manual tranny gas mileage.

actually yes a lot are ford and other manufacturers have whats called a constant velocity trans or cvt where there is one gear shaped like a cone designed to move forward and back depending on centrifugal force in relation to speed and rpms. in my opinion nothing beats a manual

An automatic transmission draws power from the engine simply to run the oil pump it requires, also it is heavier than a manual transmission, both of these factors will hurt mileage.#
However a modern transmission should omptimise gear shifting to suit current conditions.
Modern automatics are much more efficient than they were, the TH400 used in most big block GM cars used 30-40 horsepower!.
