stay home.
Make sure your tires are fully inflated (to the correct place for your tires, of course). The more rubber touches the road, the more “power” it takes to move your car.
Also, change your oil frequently, and use synthetic oil.
If you live in a place with a liveable temperature, turn off your a/c.
Shop around for the cheapest fuel prices.
Have your car serviced regularly.
Ensure tyre pressures are correct.
Do not brake suddenly.
Keep speed down.
Empty your boot (or trunk) of junk.
If you have AC, use it less often.
If your car has a roof rack, remove it when not in use.
Use public transport as often as possible.
take the bus, ride a bike, walk…
you can save money and it is less pollution.
it may not seem like taking the bus or just walking could make a differance but it does.
and what if every single person thought they couldn’t make a difference with something so simple….
or get a deisel.

Maintain the maximum reccomended air pressure in your tires,no “jackrabit” starts, or sudden bursts of acceleration, make sure your air filter is clean, and leave your car parked at home as much of the time as you can. Walk’ bicycle, car pool, or use public transportation.
The common things to do is make sure the engine is tuned properly including a new air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, cap and rotor, and good plug wires. Use premium parts on all of the above. Also make sure the tires are inflated properly. A car gets better mileage with the windows rolled up and the AC on than with the AC off and the windows down on the hi-way. In town during stop and go traffic it is the other way around.
The biggest change you can make is in your driving habits. Never give the gas pedal more that a quarter throttle unless you are going up a steep hill then downshift to a lower gear. you will notice that you can back off from full throttle to half or three quarters throttle, and save yourself the cost of replacing the catalytic converter because it has been polluted with too much fuel and plugged up. A clogged exhaust system will decrease your economy too.
Give yourself a little extra time to get where you are going and go a bit slower. At speeds over 50 mph the wind really causes a geometric increase in drag. The difference between 50 and 60 is great but the difference between 60 and 70 is much worse and traveling a 80 is a severe drain on the mileage.
Good luck. Or just get an electric car.
