Another question regrading the fuel pump on my 2004 Mercury Sable wagon.?

Could the 2 screens on the fuel pump just be clooged and the fuel pump ok? trying to save the $200 + for the cost of the pump. Since I have the tank dropped and the pump out, changing the 2 screens/filters should be easy. Any easy way to test the fuel pressure to see if the screens/filters were the problem?
We haven’t run out of fuel, but thanks for that suggestion. I admit I was just getting ceap with the filter(s) changing thought and will just go ahead and replace the pump and filters. The line fuel filter was replaces 2 days ago, but the engine wout idle, will drive and if I kepp the rpm’s up I can stop it without the engine dying. No engine check light on, but there is this red lighted icon on the lower left of the dash that I believe indicates a fuel system problem. Any idea what the pressure is supposed to be? (Think I heard the min. is 60 psi)

Trial and error is about all you can do. With the tank out and pump out there is no accurate test to be done. So you either do it all and be done or do just the filters put it all back together and hope you don’t have to take it apart again. Chances are though taht if the filters were plugged it has caused stress on the pump and if it works again it will probably fail soon. I recommend do it once and get it done with.

There’s nothing much worse than dropping your tank and doing all that work than having to do it all over again 10 minutes after you finish it.
Go ahead, get a new fuel pump. It’s just money.

before you took it out you should have check the fuel pump first by turning the key forward to see if you hear the motor come.

Have you recently ran out of fuel?

This is getting more common with current gas prices.

If you did then you burned up the pump, this is common on domestic cars and very much on Fords.
