A question on fuel economy on when to fill up…?

3

I make the same route to my duties every day. On this route is the cheapest gas station (literally right off the street on my way, so I travel less than 1/50th of a mile to have to pull into the gas station from my route, fill up, and then get back on my route. My question is, with my choise gas station being so close to my route, would it be more efficient to only do $5-$10 at a time so that there is less gas weight in the car, would that translate to more fuel efficiency? Or would topping it off every time save more gas? Any explanation would be appreciated.

The largest difference in fuel economy are your driving habits, not the weight of an extra few gallons of gas.

Of course driving habits affect fuel usage. But regardless of how you drive, you will use less fuel with less weight in the car. Thats simple physics.

I never fill my tank more than half way unless I’m on a motorway journey, in which case my Peugeot diesel is VERY economical once it reaches a cruise speed of 70mph. Apart from that, shorter urban journeys can be made much cheaper by not filling your tank.

To put real numbers into the subject, my tank is about 65litres. If I fill up thats the equivalent of carrying a young woman or teenager in the car. Everybody knows carrying more passengers uses more fuel, so its the same thing. More weight=less miles per gallon.

The only way that it wouldn’t make a difference to fill up just a bit is if you normally drive carefully on a full tank, and switch to driving like a maniac on a partially-full tank.

Keep your driving habits the same, partially fill your tank and it will save fuel usage. The only downside is that you will have to visit the petrol station more often.

The miniscule amount of gas you might save by not dragging around a few extra pounds of gasloine will not be offset byt the extra time you will put into stopping more often. You time is worth something.
