To avoid traffic jams and excessive stop-and-start driving, plan ahead, learn the traffic patterns for the times of day that you normally drive and change routes accordingly. Sure, shop around for the lowest gas prices in your area. But use the internet for your research, instead of driving from gas station to gas station to compare prices. Or use the Yellow Pages and the phone. And be sure not to burn half a tank of gas by driving to an out-of-the-way gas station, just to save a few cents.

Buy the lowest (and cheapest) octane fuel your car will run on without problems. No need to go for the “fancy” high-octane stuff, if your vehicle manual allows you to use Regular. And those “octane booster” additives you can buy are also not worth it – they probably cost more than high octane fuel anyway.
