To avoid traffic jams and excessive stop-and-start driving, plan ahead, learn the traffic patterns for the times of day that you normally drive and change routes accordingly. Sometimes it may even be more fuel efficient to drive a bit further, instead of getting stuck in rush hour traffic with excessive idling, braking and acceleration. You can also experiment with driving a bit earlier, or later – sometimes 20 minutes either way can make a world of difference in the amount of traffic on the road. Many radio stations and GPS services also offer handy up-to-the minute traffic news and advice that can save you some gas (not to mention, frustration!).

Sure, shop around for the lowest gas prices in your area. But use the internet for your research, instead of driving from gas station to gas station to compare prices. Or use the Yellow Pages and the phone. And be sure not to burn half a tank of gas by driving to an out-of-the-way gas station, just to save a few cents.

Don’t fill your gas tank to the brim – if you keep it half-full, not only will you reduce any possible gas spillage and evaporation, but the car will also be several pounds lighter, and a lighter car translates into better MPG!

To ensure proper fit of a 'ki' unit measure the inside diameter of the air intake hose. The 'ki' units come in 5mm increments and will fit 1mm smaller to 3mm larger than the specified unit. Ex: a ki-60 unit will fit a hose that measures 59mm to 63mm; a ki-65 unit will fit a hose that measures 64mm to 68mm; etc., Units for Carbureted (and Throttle Body Injected) Engines: To ensure proper fit of a 'kc' unit remove the air lid cover and measure the height from the base of the housing to the lid at 3in away from the center., Easily accomplished by removing the air lid cover and placing a flat edge across the top of the air filter, then taking a height measurement from the base to the flat edge at 3 inches away from center. Do the same with the lid. Merely add or subtract the lid height from the base height, depending upon whether the lid drops below the top of the filter or rises above the filter.

Aftermarket bolt-on and other so-called “gas savers” almost always are a waste of time, and many are an outright scam. Those that work to some degree, provide only a small benefit that is totally overshadowed by the cost of the product. So, ignore those late-night “gas gizmo” TV ads. You’re better off saving gas in other, legitimate, ways.

Buy the lowest (and cheapest) octane fuel your car will run on without problems. No need to go for the “fancy” high-octane stuff, if your vehicle manual allows you to use Regular. And those “octane booster” additives you can buy are also not worth it – they probably cost more than high octane fuel anyway.
