2 stroke Vs. 4 stroke?

5

Okay, to start off, I know there are probably 10.5 billion questions about this topic on the internet. But I’m a lazy bum and don’t feel like looking. That said, I would appreciate your most intelligent feedback on this matter.

To began:

As of right now I am in the market for a new motorcycle again. This will be my third, and I am 17, I am looking for a pre-owned motorcycle, for a good deal. I would prefer one to be upwards of 250ccs to maybe even 500cc or 600cc (depending on the engine configuration).

My problem:

I can’t seem to decide between a four-stroke, or a two-stroke (in terms of dirt bikes).
I own a two-stroke as of right now, and I understand how to preform regular maintenance and such. I have preformed a top-end rebuild on the mentioned motorcycle, and I understand what two-strokes need. So, in terms of maintenance, the four-stroke sounds more intriguing.
I do not want to be held to the curse of having to rebuild the engine every two years. I understand that I may have a motorcycle dealership preform such a task. But then I must spend my hard earned money on (very) extensive fees. And that is why a four-stroke motorcycle sounds more appealing.

Basically:

I want a two-stroke because: It is cheap to buy, it is very fast and will keep up with the rest of my friends’ motorcycles, it sounds very impressive, I also know that there are many oil-injected dirt bike motorcycles, but I have not been able to acquire such a list.

I want a four-stroke because: It will still keep up with my friends’ motorcycles, the power band may be what I need, I do not have to preform any gasoline and oil mixture processes, and I will not have to preform a top-end rebuild within the time on my ownership.

So what is your opinion? I would like to know if there are any two-stroke motorcycles that do not need new top-ends as frequently as I have stated. Also if it’s worth the time to save and buy a four-stroke? Again, I would appreciate your feedback on this matter to a great extent.

Not an expert on dirt bikes but basically 2 strokes need revs to keep the engine on song thus will be going quick all the time. A good 4 stroke will chug along at low revs. Depends what type of terrain you are riding on. Fast open tracks would suit a 2 stroke whilst tight mountain trails would be better for a 4.

I am probably way behind the times when it comes to dirt bike technology but thats how it used to be years ago

You’re right, this question is asked all over and many different opinions abound. It sounds like a four stroke is what the doctor ordered. I have owned both. Currently, I have two thumpers in my garage. My preference is obviously leaning towards the four strokes. Two strokes have their positive notes, snappy throttle response, torque, and cheap rebuilds. But they are a hassle with mixing gas and needing top ends more frequently. Rebuilding a four stroke top end isn’t all that difficult. There’s just more parts. If you buy a four stroke, get a Clymer or factory service manual for it and you’ll be fine. Occasionally, you may have to do some extracurricular research to get some answers that you can’t find in the manual but it can be done. Personally, I think rebuilding them is as much fun as riding. As far as regular maintaining the hardest thing is probably setting valve clearances. Again, not hard. Takes 15-20 mins. If you keep your valve clearances good and the cam chain at the right tension, and the timing right (if it’s wrong you can bend a valve) the rest is relatively basic.

I recently(May 2010) purchased a motorcycle for the first time. I chose the four stroke for two reasons. One- less maintenance two- can be outfitted for street legal purposes.

I’m happy with my choice seeing how I can ride my bike to the trail, ride the trail, then ride home, instead of having to trailer things in.

Good Luck.

you want a 500 or 600cc dirt bike? a 450 four has way more power than any 17 year old can ever need. yamaha yz450f is one of the most reliable bike around. i recomend that one. or if you a a big bore 2 stroke buy a maico 700. they are weapons. that much power on a dirt bike is pointless. the stock bike puts out more power than james stewarts factory 450

Crazy that I find myself using electric bike scooters for cheap transportation but it is the best move I have ever made. Not sure if it will for you.
